Daniel had been seeking the Lord about the deliverance of Israel from captivity to Persia.
But the Lord chose to speak to Daniel about the deliverance of the world from captivity to sin.
A day would come when the Messiah would be “cut off”, that is His life would be rent from Him. But “not for Himself”, but for the whole world.
When would this be?
The Lord showed Daniel it would be after 62 weeks, or 434 years after a decree to rebuild Jerusalem.
Yet the full timeframe God speaks to Daniel about is 70 weeks, or 490 years – the last week or last seven years having special significance.
This last week will be triggered by a seven-year covenant made by “the prince” with Israel.
That covenant will be broken half-way through (3½ years), when “the prince” will end all sacrifices and set up an abomination in the temple.
Who is the prince?
What is the abomination?
