DANIEL 9:20-26 (Daniel’s 70 Weeks – Part 1)

Speaker: Ian FOX

Daniel received understanding from Scripture, in the book of Jeremiah, that seventy years of captivity for the Jewish people would elapse.

That time was now fast apporaching its conclusion. There had been a change in the political landscape, with Medo-Persia the new world superpower.

Does that mean Isarel could soon be free to return to the promised land?

So, Daniel begins to pray.

In verses 20-23 we learn that at the time Daniel began to pray, the angel Gabriel was despatched. Now, at the time of the evening offering, Gabriel arrives.

Daniel has so far had understanding from Scripture, but Gabriel has been charged to give further understanding from the throne of heaven.

Daniel has counted seventy years, but the Lord wants Daniel to count seventy times seven years for at that time Israel will not be set free from captivity, but set free from sin.

That count starts from the command to rebuild Jerusalem, something that surely makes Daniel’s heart skip. Surely that means the captives will return to Israel to rebuild soon.

However, the greater hope is the promise of Messiah, the One will eventually reign from Jerusalem.

The fourteenth sermon in a series by Ian Fox. Message delivered on Sunday 22nd September 2024.
